Day Trip Ideas from the Twin Cities (Easy Minnesota Getaways)

Looking to escape the city for a day? While the Twin Cities offer plenty of adventures, some of the best day trips from Minneapolis and St. Paul are just a short drive away. From scenic parks and waterfalls to charming towns and unique attractions, these destinations are perfect for a quick getaway.

Here are some of the best day trips from the Twin Cities, all within about 1–2 hours.

St. Cloud (~1 Hour from Minneapolis)

St. Cloud is an easy and underrated day trip with a mix of outdoor adventure and fun indoor activities.

One of my favorite spots is Quarry Park and Nature Preserve. It has well-groomed trails and several quarries where you can swim during the summer. Even better—parking is only $10.

Want to keep the nature vibes going? Head over to Munsinger Gardens for a peaceful walk through beautiful flower gardens along the river.

If you’re looking for something more interactive, check out Blacklight Adventures. They offer everything from escape rooms and laser tag to mini golf, arcade games, and more.

For a nostalgic twist, visit Skatin’ Place, a retro roller skating rink that’s fun for both kids and adults. Bonus: they even offer adult-only skate times!

Gooseberry Falls State Park Waterfall

Duluth (~2 Hours 15 Minutes from Minneapolis)

Duluth is one of the most popular day trips from the Twin Cities, and for good reason. Sitting on the shores of Lake Superior, it offers incredible views and tons of things to do.

Start your day at Enger Tower, where you can climb the 80-foot observation tower for panoramic views of the city, forests, and Lake Superior.

Head down to the canal area and watch ships pass under the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge—a must-see if you time it right!

Traveling with kids? Stop by the Great Lakes Aquarium for an educational and fun experience.

If you’re up for more adventure, drive about 45 minutes north to Gooseberry Falls State Park. With 20 miles of hiking trails and stunning waterfalls, it’s one of the best outdoor spots in Minnesota.

Nearby, you’ll also find Iona’s Beach Scientific and Natural Area, known for its unique pink rocks along the shoreline.

For a fun dining experience, check out Harbor 360, a rotating restaurant with great views and surprisingly affordable American fare.

Preston (~2 Hours from Minneapolis)

Preston is a hidden gem in southeastern Minnesota and perfect for a more adventurous day trip.

The highlight here is Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park, home to the longest cave system in Minnesota, with over 13 miles of underground passages.

I visited on a road trip and it ended up being my favorite stop! While the lantern-lit geologic tour I took is no longer available, there are still plenty of options:

  • Scenic tours (great for families)
  • Wild caving tours (for a more adventurous experience)

Above ground, the Forestville area has scenic walking trails and historic buildings to explore.

Mankato (~1 Hour 30 Minutes from Minneapolis)

Mankato is another great option for a quick and unique getaway.

Visit Minneopa State Park, where you can actually drive through a bison range—such a cool experience! There’s also a beautiful waterfall just a short walk away on a paved trail.

I haven’t done this full day trip yet, but it’s high on my list—especially with a stop at Chankaska Creek Ranch, Winery & Distillery on the way. It’s the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine by the fire if you’re going for a slower-paced day.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re looking for waterfalls, scenic hikes, unique attractions, or relaxing wineries, these day trips from the Twin Cities offer something for everyone. The best part? You don’t need to travel far to feel like you’ve truly gotten away.
