Copenhagen is the perfect mix of history, charm, and laid-back city vibes. From stunning castles to colorful waterfronts, there’s so much to explore. This itinerary follows our 5-day stay after a trip to Norway (you can check that itinerary out here!).
This Copenhagen 5 day itinerary is perfect for first-time visitors looking to experience castles, canals, and the city’s charming atmosphere.

Day 1: Arrival & Nyhavn Stroll
Afternoon/Evening: Arrive in Copenhagen
After arriving in Copenhagen, make your way to your hotel by taxi or public transportation. If you plan to explore a lot, consider purchasing the Copenhagen Card (96-hour option), which includes public transport and free or discounted entry to many attractions. For us this included almost every attraction we went to and many more.
Once you’ve checked in, head out for a relaxed walk around Nyhavn. This iconic waterfront is lined with colorful buildings, historic ships, and cozy restaurants—basically, it’s Copenhagen’s postcard moment.
Where to Stay:
I recommend Go Hotel Østerport. It’s conveniently located right next to a train station, making it perfect if you plan to rely on public transport. It was reasonably price hotel that was clean and safe.
Day 2: Palaces, City Views & Tivoli Magic
Morning: Christiansborg Palace
Start your day exploring Christiansborg Palace, home to Denmark’s Parliament. Be sure to visit the Royal Reception Rooms, the underground ruins, and the Royal Stables—each offers a unique glimpse into Danish history.

Afternoon: City Exploring & Round Tower
Wander down Strøget, one of Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping streets, then make your way to Amalienborg Palace, where the royal family resides.
Afterward, climb the Round Tower for panoramic views of the city. The spiral walk up is part of the experience!
Evening: Tivoli Gardens
End your day at Tivoli Gardens—one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. Visiting Tivoli Gardens Copenhagen is a must, especially in the evening when the park lights up. Even if you’re not into rides which I’m not, the atmosphere alone is worth it.

Day 3: Castle Day Trip
Morning: Frederiksborg Castle
Take a train to Hillerød (about 45 minutes–1 hour) to visit Frederiksborg Castle. Surrounded by a lake and beautifully landscaped gardens, it’s easily one of the most stunning castles in Denmark. Inside, you’ll find the National History Museum. This is one of the best day trips from Copenhagen and a must for any Copenhagen castles itinerary.
Lunch:
Grab lunch in Hillerød—there are plenty of cozy spots near the castle.
Afternoon: Kronborg Castle
Next, head to Helsingør to visit Kronborg Castle, famously known as the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. You can explore the grand halls and even venture into the underground casemates.
Tip: Kronborg is closed on Mondays and typically closes around 4 PM, so plan accordingly!
If navigating public transport feels overwhelming, you can also book this guided day tour that includes both castles, a cathedral and the Viking Ship Museum that are all outside of Copenhagen.
Evening:
Return to Copenhagen and enjoy a relaxing evening after a full day of exploring.
Day 4: Cafés, Culture & Waterfront Walks
Morning: Café Stop at Atelier September
Start your morning at Atelier September. My sister insisted we go—and while there was a bit of a wait, the aesthetic and food made it worth it. It’s one of those places that just feels very Copenhagen.
Alternate Option:
Take a short trip to Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde to see real Viking ships and learn about Denmark’s seafaring history.
Afternoon: Canal Tour
If you purchased the Copenhagen Card, take advantage of the included canal tour. A Copenhagen canal tour is one of the best ways to see the city from a different perspective.
Evening: Nyhavn & The Little Mermaid
Spend your evening strolling through Nyhavn again (it hits different at sunset), then walk over to see the Little Mermaid statue—one of Copenhagen’s most iconic landmarks.

Day 5: Slow Morning & Departure
Enjoy your final morning in Copenhagen by doing a little souvenir shopping or relaxing at a local café. Take in the atmosphere one last time before heading to the airport for your flight home.
Final Thoughts
Copenhagen is one of those cities that feels effortlessly charming. Between the castles, canals, and cozy cafés, it’s easy to fall in love with its slower pace and rich history. This itinerary gives you a great mix of must-see sights and relaxed exploring—but don’t be afraid to wander a little. Sometimes the best travel moments aren’t planned.
