Perfect 5-Day Bergen, Norway Itinerary for Nature & History Lovers

Bergen perfectly blends stunning nature with rich history, colorful waterfront buildings, and cozy Scandinavian charm. Whether you want to cruise through dramatic fjords, hike above the city, or wander through historic streets, Bergen has something for everyone.

This itinerary follows my own 5-day trip to Bergen and includes some helpful tips, alternate activity ideas, and recommendations based on what I personally loved most during the trip. You can check out my full budget breakdown here.

Day 1: Arrive in Bergen & Experience the City Atmosphere

Arrive at Bergen Airport, pick up your luggage, and head into the city via the Flybussen airport bus or a taxi. The ride into downtown Bergen is easy and gives you your first glimpse of the surrounding mountains and colorful neighborhoods.

We happened to arrive during Norway’s Constitution Day celebration, which made the experience even more memorable. The streets were packed with people wearing traditional Norwegian attire called bunads, and fireworks lit up the night sky. Watching the fireworks from our hotel rooftop patio was such a fun way to start the trip.

Hotel Suggestion

I highly recommend staying at Scandic Ørnen. The location was convenient for walking around the city, and the rooftop area had amazing views.

Optional Evening Activities

  • Walk through the historic Bryggen waterfront area
  • Grab dinner at the Bergen Fish Market
  • Enjoy the harbor views at sunset

Day 2: Hardangerfjord Day Trip

This was easily my favorite tour of the entire trip.

We took a full-day excursion to Hardangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous fjords. Throughout the tour, we passed waterfalls, mountains, tiny villages, and some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. One thing I especially appreciated was that our guide shared so much information about daily life in Norway, local traditions, and the history of the region during the drive.

Important Note:
The exact tour I took is unfortunately no longer offered. However, I found a very similar tour (Scenic Hardangerfjord w/ Waterfalls and Lunch) that also receives great reviews for giving insight into typical life in Norway in addition to the scenic fjord experience.

Tips for the Tour

  • Bring layers and a rain jacket
  • Charge your phone or camera beforehand — you’ll take lots of photos
  • Sit by the window if possible for the best views during the drive

Day 3: Mt. Fløyen, Hiking & Exploring Bergen

Start your morning by taking the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen. If you enjoy hiking, you can also hike to the top instead.

Once at the summit, you’ll get panoramic views overlooking Bergen, the surrounding fjords, and the mountains. There are several hiking trails depending on your fitness level and how much time you want to spend outdoors.

One of the best easy-to-moderate hikes is the Vidden Trail, which offers incredible scenery and typically takes around 2–3 hours.

After descending from Mt. Fløyen, spend the rest of the day exploring downtown Bergen.

Exploring Bryggen: Bergen’s Most Iconic Landmark

No visit to Bryggen is complete without spending time wandering through its colorful wooden buildings and narrow alleyways. Bryggen is one of Bergen’s most famous landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with history, shops, cafés, and small museums. Originally built as part of the old Hanseatic trading port, the area dates back centuries and gives you a glimpse into Bergen’s maritime past. I loved simply walking through the crooked passageways because there always seemed to be another hidden corner, artisan shop, or photo spot waiting to be discovered. It is especially beautiful early in the morning before the crowds arrive or later in the evening when the harbor quiets down. Bryggen is also centrally located, making it easy to combine with nearby attractions like Bergenhus Fortress, Fish Market, and Torgallmenningen, all of which are within walking distance.

Day 4: Fjord Cruise Adventure

No trip to Bergen feels complete without experiencing the fjords from the water.

On Day 4, embark on a half-day fjord cruise departing from Bergen’s harbor. These cruises showcase dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, peaceful villages, and the breathtaking scenery Norway is famous for.

Even if the weather is chilly, I highly recommend spending at least part of the cruise on the outdoor deck because the views are incredible.

What to Bring

  • Light jacket or windbreaker
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Camera
  • Sunglasses if visiting in summer

Day 5: Last Morning in Bergen

Spend your final morning soaking in more of Bergen before heading to your next destination.

You can:

  • Wander through Bryggen one last time
  • Pick up souvenirs
  • Relax at a café
  • Visit the KODE Art Museums if you enjoy art and design

After our stay in Bergen, we flew to Copenhagen to continue our Scandinavian trip. You can find the 5 day itinerary for Copenhagen here.
