Top Things to Do in Bergen, Norway: Fjords, Hiking, History, and More

Bergen, Norway offers the perfect combination of outdoor adventure, stunning scenery, and rich history. Whether you’re looking to cruise through dramatic fjords, hike above the city, explore colorful historic neighborhoods, or simply soak in Norwegian culture, Bergen has something for everyone.

I visited Bergen in 2025 as part of a graduation trip with my sister, and these were some of my favorite experiences from our time there. Check out the full 5 day itinerary here and my budget breakdown here.

Bryggen colorful buildings in bergen Norway

Explore the Historic Bryggen Waterfront

No visit to Bergen is complete without spending time wandering through Bryggen, the city’s most iconic landmark. This colorful row of wooden buildings lines the harbor and has become one of the most recognizable sights in Norway.

Bryggen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was once an important trading center for the Hanseatic League. Today, visitors can explore its narrow alleyways, browse local shops, stop in cozy cafés, and learn about Bergen’s maritime history.

I loved simply wandering through the passageways and discovering hidden corners that felt like stepping back in time. There are lots of little shops here with unique souvenirs. Bryggen is especially beautiful in the early morning before the crowds arrive or in the evening when the harbor begins to quiet down.

Since it’s centrally located, it’s easy to combine your visit with nearby attractions like Bergenhus Fortress, the Fish Market, and Torgallmenningen Square.

Take a Day Trip to Hardangerfjord

If I had to choose my favorite experience from the entire trip, it would be our day tour to Hardangerfjord.

The tour took us through some of Norway’s most spectacular scenery, including waterfalls, mountains, picturesque villages, and of course the stunning fjord itself. We traveled by both sprinter van and ferry, which allowed us to experience the landscape from multiple perspectives.

One of the things I appreciated most was that our guide shared so much information about everyday life in Norway. Learning about Norwegian culture, traditions, and daily life made the trip feel much more meaningful than simply sightseeing.

The exact tour I took is unfortunately no longer offered. However, I found a very similar tour (Scenic Hardangerfjord w/ Waterfalls and Lunch) that also receives great reviews for giving insight into typical life in Norway in addition to the scenic fjord experience.

Ride the Fløibanen to the Top of Mt. Fløyen

One of Bergen’s most popular attractions is the Fløibanen Funicular, which transports visitors from downtown Bergen to the top of Mt. Fløyen in just a few minutes.

The views from the summit are incredible. Looking out over Bergen’s colorful rooftops, surrounding mountains, and nearby fjords was one of my favorite viewpoints in the city.

Even if you’re not an avid hiker, I highly recommend making the trip up the mountain simply for the scenery.

Go Hiking Around Mt. Fløyen

If you enjoy hiking, Mt. Fløyen offers a variety of trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging adventures.

One trail I particularly enjoyed was the Vidden Trail. It offers beautiful mountain views while still being manageable for most travelers with a moderate fitness level. Depending on how far you choose to go, you can spend anywhere from a couple of hours to most of the day exploring the area.

One thing I loved about hiking in Bergen was how quickly you can escape the city and feel completely immersed in nature.

Take a Fjord Cruise

Norway’s fjords are world-famous for a reason, and experiencing them from the water should be on every Bergen itinerary.

We embarked on a half-day fjord cruise  departing directly from Bergen’s harbor. Throughout the journey we passed dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, charming villages, and countless photo opportunities.

If you’re visiting during the warmer months, I recommend spending some time on the outdoor deck. Just be prepared for the wind. I was glad I packed a light jacket because it was much cooler on the water than I expected.

The scenery was absolutely breathtaking and offered a completely different perspective than what we experienced during our Hardangerfjord day trip.

Wander Through Torgallmenningen Square

Located in the heart of Bergen, Torgallmenningen is the city’s main public square and a great place to people-watch, shop, or grab a coffee.

The square often serves as a gathering place for events and celebrations. We were lucky enough to visit during Norway’s Constitution Day festivities, when the city was filled with people wearing traditional bunads and celebrating throughout the streets.

The festive atmosphere made our first day in Bergen especially memorable.

Visit Bergenhus Fortress

Located near Bryggen, Bergenhus Fortress is one of the oldest and best-preserved fortifications in Norway.

The grounds are free to explore and offer beautiful views of the harbor. It’s an easy stop to add while you’re already exploring the waterfront area.

History lovers will especially enjoy learning about Bergen’s role in Norway’s past.

Visit the KODE Art Museums

If you’re looking for an indoor activity or simply enjoy art, the KODE Art Museums are worth adding to your itinerary.

The museum complex features works by Norwegian and international artists and offers a nice break from outdoor sightseeing, especially if Bergen’s famous rainy weather decides to make an appearance.

Experience Norway’s Constitution Day

If your travel dates happen to align with May 17th, you’re in for a special treat.

We arrived on Constitution Day and quickly discovered why it’s one of Norway’s most important celebrations. The streets were packed with families, parades filled the city center, and nearly everyone seemed to be dressed in traditional clothing.

That evening we even watched fireworks from our hotel rooftop patio. It was an unexpected highlight that made our trip feel even more special.

Hotel Suggestion

I highly recommend staying at Scandic Ørnen. The location was convenient for walking around the city, and the rooftop area had amazing views.

Final Thoughts

Bergen offers the perfect balance of nature, history, and culture. Whether you’re hiking above the city, cruising through the fjords, exploring Bryggen’s historic streets, or learning about Norwegian life from local guides, there is no shortage of incredible experiences.

If you’re planning a trip to Norway, I highly recommend spending at least a few days in Bergen. It was one of the highlights of my Scandinavian adventure and a destination I would happily visit again.
